Description: Reverse reads: "Zanes Cave's - Bellefontaine, O. Logan Co." This photograph shows limestone stalactites. Now called Zane Shawnee Caverns, the cave system is located in Jefferson Township, just east of Bellefontaine, Ohio. The caverns are a show cave, or commercial cave, presently owned by the United Remnant Band of the Shawnee Nation. These caverns are located near the Ohio Caverns; both cave systems were formed by the same glacial process which deposited moraine upon nearby Campbell Hill. The land adjacent to Zane Shawnee Caverns was used as a thoroughfare for the Shawnee, as it provided a portage between the Great Miami River and the rivers feeding into Lake Erie, particularly the Maumee River. However, the caverns were not known to modernity until they were discovered in 1892, when John Dunlap rescued a boy and a dog from a sinkhole. The caverns were named the Zane Caverns, after the nearby village of Zanesfield. The caverns were operated as a show cave throughout most of the 20th century. In 1996, the Shawnee Nation URB purchased the caverns and surrounding land, and renamed the site as the Zane Shawnee Caverns. The URB continues to operate the caverns as a show cave, and has also founded the Shawnee Woodland Native American Museum on the site. This museum is among the few Native American museums owned and operated by a Native American tribe, and displays exhibits about George Drouillard, a mixed-blood Shawnee guide, chief hunter and interpreter for the Lewis & Clark Expedition. Also on the cavern site is "Southwind Park," a camping and retreat area which hosts URB events. A small permanent settlement has also been erected at the site. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Pictorial record, compiled in a photo album, of the 1930 location and excavation of Fort Jefferson in Darke County, Ohio. The project was led by H.R. McPherson of the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society and Frazer E. Wilson of the Greenville Historical Society. The album contains photographs of the site as it was being excavated as well as descriptions of each photograph. Fort Jefferson was built about six miles south of Greenville, Ohio, on the order of General Arthur St. Clair in October 1791. The purpose of the fort was to serve as a supply garrison for St. Clair's campaign against the area’s American Indian population, hence its original name of Fort Deposit. In November 1791, St. Clair attacked the area's tribes, but under the leadership of Shawnee chief Weyapiersenwah (Blue Jacket) and Miami chief Mishikinakwa (Little Turtle), a large alliance of seasoned volunteer warriors from nine different American Indian tribes easily defeated St. Clair and his troops. This loss, which was one of the worst defeats of the American military at the hands of the American Indians, came to be known as "St. Clair’s Defeat." During the battle, well over half of St. Clair’s 1,400 men were killed or wounded. After the battle, St. Clair’s men fled to Fort Jefferson, but found little in the way of supplies and quickly moved south to Fort Washington. Later, Fort Jefferson was used during the campaign of General Anthony Wayne before being abandoned in 1796. Description: Reverse reads: "The trap - the finished job of mine sealing near East Springfield, Jefferson County. Presented by Mr. S. M. Ripley." Air trap seals, also known as wet seals, were installed extensively through the Works Progress Administration's mining sealing project. Wet seals are usually made of concrete block, with either a hole, or a pipe to allow for water drainage. Long term effectiveness of these were limited however, due to debris clogging the exit, and/or collapse, so the design was changed. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: A-6 electric drill made by the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company of Columbus, Ohio in use at the Wheeling Township Coal Mining Company, Adena, Ohio, 1933.
